Home Makers Kitchen
The Home Makers Kitchen was a project that became so close to my heart. A childhood friend’s mother(who was like a second mom growing up) reached out because she was finally ready to make her kitchen function properly.
I remember in the beginning stages of this project we sat down to discuss the wants and needs, she was just looking for complete function. I think she was bit shocked after I created some renderings for her with some fresh ideas that not only made it functional but felt like a kitchen you grew up cooking in with your mother. So much so that the day we finished we both sat and cried when she said the space truly reminded her of her mom.
With that being said, here’s some things we changed in this space.
The project started with demo where all the cabinets, counters, soffit and a wall was ripped out. We then enclosed the entry from the living room to the now open dining/kitchen area slightly to allow for a longer kitchen wall, letting there be more space behind the new island for stools to easily be pulled out and sat out. We moved the fridge and stove and then re worked the kitchen cabinet layout allowing for an upgrade to new custom cabinetry and appliances.
A few details we made sure the cabinets housed was a stand mixer lift, a drawer for her knives, utensils, cookie sheets and spices, a deep top drawer for her bread and functional appliance cabinet where the doors could tuck away. We fit all of those details in to the space, had plenty of other storage and was able to keep a feature wall.
We had a happy accident as soon as the appliances were delivered that we were thankfully able to remedy right away as our cabinets weren’t complete yet. What we originally thought was going to be a 36” range turned out to be a mack daddy 42” range. The appliance company she ordered from sent the wrong size range and hood insert and we were actually super happy about that mix up because it fits the space perfectly. We pivoted and sent in new cabinet plans ASAP to accommodate for it as well as had enough room to still display the sconce details on either side of the custom hood cover.
Finishing the space off with new countertops, backsplash, light fixtures, paint, flooring, window and millwork it became functional and stunning. We chose a quirky green to brighten the previously dull space and opted for softer, more natural finishes in the rest of the space to bring a sense of peace while the homeowner did what she loved most, bake.
I think I say this after every project but I truly mean it when it’s all said and done and all the stress of the project is over that this is why I do what I do. And, why I can say I love my job.
